3 Hermanas – Mexican Home Cooking

Here we find ourselves with August coming full on. Which means most of the day it is either overcast or foggy with some blust. Today around mid day it was sunny, El Yay !
Mid day around these parts also finds the Good Dr., hungry. A handful of months ago a new restaurant opened up around the corner. It’s an odd little place attached to Rose & Mike’s liquor in Richmond. Grandma K and Grampa were able to check out the place a few weeks ago. They found the experience quite favorable, which drives the interest higher. Today it was time to visit 3 Hermanas (3 Sisters), my wife agreed and off we went. To the bank, cause I didn’t have any cash. After the bank though, we were there.

Again, it’s an odd little building. Quite long and thin and maybe 6 tables at the most. I counted 4 women working and they all had on their uniform. A sleveless apron smock kind of apparel. Just as Gramdma K described, we were the only english speaking patrons there. The chips & salsa came right away along with the menus. The menus had something for each part of the day, typical mexican favorites. You had your Gorditas, Tacos, Quesadillas, you get the idea. As I was hoping for, some items I hadn’t had before. Milanesa, a crumb covered beef steak or Guarache, a fresh tortilla grilled & filled with meat, onions and cilantro.
Seemed basic and then yet really tasty. The chips & salsa looked fine. The chips were made some time today, a red salsa and a green salsa. I’m a fan of the green, so that was my first dip. Hooyah, no salt there. I added some and the salsa jumped up. The red was really weird, tasted heavily of black pepper.
Soon the waitress brought over a 3rd salsa, clearly made mostly of real chilis! Lovely & fine.
Semi-soon after, my lunch arrived, the Chiles Rellenos (see photograph above). I was pleased, especially since the prices here seem to be on the high side, in my opinion. 9 dollars for lunch is a bit much. But I wouldn’t hesitate now, you get your money’s worth.
Notice the handmade tortilla, quite thin and very tasty.

Here we see my lovely wife’s lunch, sopas topped with pork and … well tons of goodies. If you look close, that looks like cheese (NOT CHEDDAR) and crema! That there is love, real love.
She enjoyed her lunch as I did mine.
I noticed early on that each item served, was made without salt. I don’t ever remember having to sprinkle salt on any mexican food, but here I was salting ever so lightly my lunch. Which I believe is just fine, Americans ingest too much salt anyway. If you want it, add it. If not, well there you are.

As we were about mid-way through our meal we were served a little bowl nicely packed with nopales salsa (cactus) with fresh chips! Bonus. I tossed it in to the tortillas and in with the rice & beans.
Today my wife and I are happy that we finally went by the 3 Hermanas – Mexian Home Cooking restaurant. They serve a family sized meal (needs salt), well prepared (needs salt) food stuffs and you feel well cared for. The senior Sister (boy that could make problems in translation) came out and greeted us as we left. She noticed our interest (and maybe my big black camera) in her food and wanted to say good-bye. I wish the sisters good health and happy customers for years.
Xo Xo
ps – I noticed on their menu they do special soups on the weekend, that’d be Saturday & Sunday. Menudo, Mole & Pozole. Sure the Mole catches most people’s eyes, but for me … it’s the Pozole that makes me scream. I haven’t had decent Pozole for years, my friend Jose made thee best. I got a calendar and I know how to use it, I’ll be there.

  1. That was a crazy good lunch from which I’m still recovering. Even with eating only 1/2 for lunch and the second 1/2 for dinner, I feel like it’ll be another day or two before I’ll be hungry again. Incredulicioous.

  2. i was introduced to this place by my friends who live close to there, by Potrero and San Pab. your review was right on!! this place is sooo delicious, and the staff is so friendly. i honestly feel like i’m eating at a breakfast nook off of a kitchen of an auntie. i usually get the beef hard-shelled tacos – the meat has such a wonderful flavor. i drive there from oakland when i want to eat mexican. it used to be for picante on gilman/6th, which i also love, but now it’s for 3 Hermanas!
    thanks for a pleasant read!

    Take care and good health,
    Biggles

  4. Great place! Very HOMEstyle food! One tip that’s not on the menu – super beef soup with home-made beef broth that’s out of this world!
