DiNg DonG, Acme Bread Calling – It’s Pain de Mie, El Grande!

No, this isn’t a close-up. Look to the right and you’ll see my stove, and there in front? A large bread knife.
Where did it come from? What would one possibly do with such a beast? Got any ideas?

Holy cow, check out that crust. Look at the structure of its inner beauty, I’m stunned.
Last evening I was resting after work, not feeling well. The family had been down the previous two days and I seemed to be on the straight track to sniffleville. Not only that, my lunch had been a tad rich and my tummy was a brick. As the sun was taking its final peep over the tops of the houses, someone came to the door. It was Creepy E with a Chesire Cat grin on his face. He held up a brown paper sack with Acme Bread’s logo on the side. “COOL.” I thought. He kept grinning and shoving the bag towards me and opening it. “Dang dude!” And I remembered him talking about such an elusive beast months before. What he found was Acme’s Pain de Mie that’s usually reserved for commercial accounts. If you’re lucky, sometimes you’ll find them available. Creepy says they have another name for it, but you get the idea.
All of a sudden I had the inspiration to cook. Otherwise it was going to be delivered pizza and even that was going to be a tough journey.
Gee, when given such a gift. Such a wonderful fresh, yummy gift. What does one do? I know, make toasted cheese sammiches!
Butter the outter sides of the bread, install cheese and/or ham slices. Toast on cast iron griddle with a bacon press until golden brown. Serve.

The toasted bread, the toasted butter, perfection. This bread browns so damned perfectly on the surface. Then, just below is this warm, pully and moist inner sanctum of doughy love. This loaf was baked this day and just for me, neat eh?
What’s on the menu for tonight? Got any ideas?

  1. Hey DM,
OooOOoOooo, oh man. Now that’s a humdinger for sure. HAHAHHAHAHA, man a Monte Cristo that size would drop me where I stood.
    Neat!

  2. No, you’ve already done the ultimate. Grilled cheese is the ideal for fresh white bread. Now for dessert, bread pudding would be divine….

  3. wow……I’d love to make a loaf that looks that nice! Great lookin’ ‘sammy’!
Hope you are back on your two feet!

  4. You’ve already done my favorite thing with p de m, the ultimate grilled cheese. Pain de mie also makes awesome french toast. Just toast in general, slather anything on it, and it will be goooood. Say, do you have any foie gras around? 😉

  5. Me likey the Acme Bread. I have never seen one like that though. Look how lovely it toasts..the cheese all melty and stuff. Life is good.

  6. Doc,
Grilled cheese was my immediate reaction on seeing the loaf. But now that you’ve gotten that out of the way, I think a club sandwich should be next.
