Joe Bob, Route 66 and BBQ.

Route 66 from Oklahoma City to Tulsa…July 2004
I was enroute from New Mexico to Tulsa and decided to take old Route 66 from Oklahoma City to Tulsa. It sort of follows the newer toll road but is a great way to see the real OK. They had lots of rain the week before so everything was green and muddy with red clay soil. Beautiful drive and food along the way.
Right away near Welston….I came upon Pioneer BBQ.

This ancient stone hut looked 100 years old, inside and out. I was too early for BQ, so ordered breakfast. Bacon, eggs, hash browns (?) and a biscuit with iced tea. Thankfully the eggs and bacon were the real thing but the biscuit!! The best I have ever had anywheres. It was about 5 inches across. Texan sized…..the outside crunchy and burned a bit…the inside was light and flaky like no other. The grayish gravy was not hot so I avoided it and just used butter for lubrication.

The BBQ begins at 10:30 AM and the Q was going out back already.
I was the only non smoker in the whole joint. 80 year old grandmas were puffin away. This one table full of one family with a 3 month old were all four smoking and yodeling the whole time I was in there. Nonstop smoke n yodel. The interior and kitchen looked all original.

I must return some day to have real meat and see if it has that Marlboro aftertaste….this place deserves a special trip. The local viewing is worth a stop also.

Only drove a few miles and came to Faye’s Fried Chicken. Not open….dang!
Further down the two lane road, I came to PJs BBQ. Not open yet….

Then came Russ’ BBQ. Too full to stop, but note the OK sized patron headed for the front door. She is fixin to get another blast of meat..
Thanks to Joe Bob for finding some interesting food down a path less followed.

  1. Damn! We got to get the inside scoop on Faye’s Fried Chicken. You know it *has* to be good if there’s bars on the winders. (Cain’t let the riff-raff eat up all that fine chicken.)
Joe Bob, I implore you, go back to Faye’s and get me some pics of her fried chicken! I *need* fried chicken – I’m experiencing a deficit.
