Brazilian X Salada – East Bay Pizza delivery

Another one of those multi-colored pizza flyers showed up on our doorstep a few weeks ago. In the past I would have tossed it. I’m not a fan of these franchised or cookie cutter establishments that show up for a year or so, then disapear as quietly as they arrived. But after Rworange from a local food related forum started checking these local Richmond places out, I had to see what they had.
Come on, you just gotta know what’s in this sammich.

Rw did some talking with someone from a similar place in Richmond and they said there was about 8000 Brazilian people living right here in Richmond. I’m hoping they all want to open restaurants or markets, that’s for sure. In any case, they seem to be buying up these cookie cutter pizza places and adding a few goodies of their own to the menus. Unfortunately, there’s only one Brazilian item on this one and it’s called, Brazilian X Salada. As far as I know, Brazil’s language is Portuguese and Babel Fish didn’t give me any translation on Salada. Now if you do Spanish, then we come up with Salty. And that my friend, makes complete and total sense considering the ingredients of this sammich. I sliced it in half, figuring Mama would only want a portion, but no. She said something along the lines of, “It’s like crack.” And promptly devoured the whole thing.
What’s in it?
It starts with a hamburger bun, she couldn’t place the lube. Then there’s a hamburger patty, but it’s an odd one. Mama said it resembled some patty she had in the 70s sometime where they were experimenting with some soy protein and beef mixture. Yeah, like that. Lay in a slice of cheese here, yes you get the idea. Then a slice of Canadian Bacon and following that? A fried egg. But wait, there’s more. Add to this a hot dog, full yet? Then, in there somewhere is a spoonful of corn. And to top it all off? A handful of those canned french fries. No pickle.
Let’s review shall we? A bun, burger patty, cheese, Canadian bacon, fried egg, hot dog, corn and canned french fries. Ain’t that cool? And it’s only 6 bux.
Oh, and their pizza is just fine. My favorite part of our cheese pizza was the fact the cheese had been browned. This gave it all kinds of nice flavor. We’ll order from them each time.

  1. Well, I can help with the Portuguese translation. Salada means salad. The letter “X” in Portuguese is pronounced “shees,” which sounds sort of like “cheese,” and is often used to indicate cheese. For example, in Brazil, X-Burguer means cheeseburger.
So “X Salada” would translate as “Cheese Salad,” which makes absolutely no sense given that your sandwich is neither a salad nor does it have cheese. Hmm.
I can tell you that Brazilians love to put corn on everything, frequently accompanied by slivered carrots and, occasionally, peas. This trinity appears on everything from hot dogs to pizza. Yes, pizza. The delicious vegetarina sandwich at Berkeley’s Brazil Cafe is in a similar vein.

  2. Hey OakTown,
Thanks for stopping by. Ya know, there may have been cheese in there. It’s tough to know.
The trinity sounds fine to me. But canned french fries? What’s up with that?
In any case, apparently it was just what the doctor ordered.

  3. The best part was getting a good bout of nausea after eating that damn sammich. I guess I should’ve expected to be sick after being on a carb-restricted diet for a coupla weeks. Oh, well. No more crack cocaine saladas for me I suppose.

  4. Can’t say I ever encountered canned french fries during my six months in Brazil, but I wasn’t exactly looking for them.

  5. Yep, the pronuciation is (sheeze-tudo).
When I had this, there is cheese in there and a tomato and a little lettuce, but you lose track after a while. If you eat it in the pizza joint, they give you catsup and mayo to drizzle on it.
Then again, give all that is in this sandwich, they might have forgot some of it. Who’d know?
Thanks to this review, I tried another cookie cutter place in Albertson’s Plaza called Americano which has 24 hour taco/pizza delivery. Have to check out those flyers.
Love the picture and write-up on the x-tudo.

  6. Our local (Mill Valley) Brazilian pizzeria used to serve more of their dishes — including feijoada on weekends, one of my favorite South American dishes. For some reason they cut out the fish and chicken dishes and the feijoada. They still make a fairly authentic pizza, though: thin crust style. I would love it if more of the newcomers would keep some Brazilian food on their menus since they seem to be buying more places on this side of the bay as well.

  7. Anyone checked out Nino’s Pizzeria in Berkeley? I have had a few dishes that were Brazil-o-licious. But there has been the occasional off-night visit there, too.

  8. Totally off this topic, but I see you wanted a Burns Bread Knife, too. Are you gnashing your teeth at having been sniped? I was shocked to see what it had gone for. Damn I want another of them, though.

  9. Hey B’gina,
Yeah, I did. I’d been watching it for the last 4 days or so. And it was obvious others were watching it because nobody had bid on it.
Gnashing my teeth? Not really. But sure, I wanted it badly. I love the burns line of knives. I have some used bread knives and LOVE the feel of the handle in my hand. Plus the serrated edges are AMAZING and no company has reproduced anything credible since.
See, modern bread knives have these huge scalloped edges and they tear the bread. Those tiny little serrations are so much nicer. I LOVE Burns knives.
I wasn’t shocked at what it went for, I think I bid 75 dollars, that was the most I wanted to pay, winning or no.
I could have used auction sniper or something related, but that’s not how I do it. I lay down my number a few minutes and give people time to play. If I win, then I win. If not? That’s okay too. I can surely use the money elsewhere.
Thanks for stopping by and hope you’re doing well.

  10. Mmmm…I remember those x-saladas. Love ’em with a fresh Brazilian style juice on ice. Nice when they’re pressed in a sandwich grill, add some homemade mayonnaise, hold the hotdogs (never had those on a x-salada), add some green olives, and all the other stuff you mentioned. A great late night snack out in the open air or at a corner bar. Delicioso! So yummy!

  11. I was wondering if your heart was still beating after this…geezz…my god…bacon, cheese, and egg…oh, and the meat patty…I’m chuckling here because only you could find this, order it, and say it was tasty…Jesus.

  12. I am Brazilian and a Real X-Salada has nothing to do with this!!!
It’s a bun with mayo, a burger, cheese, lettuce and tomato!!!
    Gosh, what a misconception!

  13. Hi – I googled the Burns Bread Knife and came to this site. I bought one at a rummage sale for 25 cents. I love it. It is a stainless steel with a painted green wood handle. The blade says THE BURNS BREAD KNIFE Stainless Steel Shape No. 107-S Pat. 8-23-21 The Burns MFG Co Syracuse, N.Y., U.S.A. What can you tell me about these knifes?

  14. My father has his fathers Burns Bread Knife and it is inscribed with:
    The Burns Bread Knife
    Stainless Steel
    Shape No. 101 S
    Pat’d in Canada, March 21, 1922
He recently forgot it at a hunting camp and insisted on getting it back. What are these knives worth? Of course this one has a lot of sentimental value. Can you still get these knives new?

  15. Hey Jennifer,
Yeah, that’s the one. It depends on condition and where you go. If you check out local flea markets, garage sales and related you’ll pay 20 bux or less. If you try ebay, it’ll go over 80 dollars for a near new one in a box. They’re amazing knives and feel great in the hand. Also keep in mind they CAN be sharpened, you just need to find someone who knows what they’re doing.

  16. I have just Googled Burns Knife and arrived at your page. Can you advise me if the one I bought today at a ‘Boot Sale’ here in England is the same family as the ones you have been talking about? It is inscribed very prettily ‘The Burns Bread Knife’ Pat no 261184 Made in Sheffield. The blade is about 8inches and it has a bone handle. Thank you

  17. hey im making a project on xsalada and i was wondering if you knew the history of it. or any background information? it would be a great help. thanks
