Pappy’s Choice Seasoning – An excellent rub for immediate use

Do you ever get that feeling you’re the last one on planet earth to find out? Find out that Pappy makes a fricken great out of the jar experience rub? I feel like a dope.
As with many of us food nutcases, I shop at many food related stores. And I find myself at our local Raley’s from time to time. I’d go to Safeway, but our demographics won’t allow it to be worth visiting. Unless all you need is vinegar or diapers. Anyway, I’ve been shopping at our local Raley’s since maybe 1991. And I remember seeing this rack of seafood spices and jars of glop since way back. Since I don’t pay much mind to ‘grocery store’ mass produced rubs and sauces, I passed it up, and over and up again.
I did until this last week. I decided to finally walk over and see what was in it. Kosher salt flakes, paprika, pepper, coriander, mustard, celery seed, garlic, onion and fine herbs. There’s nothing in there that sucks. Well, except the garlic, but that’s another rant of mine for another day. This stuff is good, very good. I’ve used it as a dry rub on meat and last night did stir fried onions over the grill (mesquite and hickory). Mama and I snarfed the onions before the burger! Well, at least I did anyway. Go Pappy go!
Turns out Pappy’s Choice Seasoning is only one of many fancy things they make. There’s a salt free one that I want too. This version with the salt flakes can get out of hand pretty quick if you don’t watch it. But if you do? You’ll most certainly be rewarded. I found it excellent on beef roasts, chickens, pork and veggeis. I would think the salt free version would be better for things like soups & stews where you more than likely have enough salt already and don’t need to be adding no more saline action.
I think next week I’ll place an order for some large containers of this stuff, yessir. Thanks Pappy for making such a nice off-the-shelf product and I apologize for blowing you off for so long. I’ll do better!

  1. Okay, I admit it. I snarfed up the onions, too. They were divine. Ya know, that rub would be very good on eggplant. Mmmm, grilled eggplant. I’m gonna buy me some tomorrow.

  2. I’m a little embarrassed to share this info, but Pappy’s is carried in industrial-sized shakers at Smart’n’Final.

  3. Hey Carolyn,
Neat! There’s a store on my way home, I’ll have to go see. I’ve never been to a S&F store.
I hope they have the salt free one, that’s the one I’m looking for.

  4. Hey Farah,
Neat, I’ve never written to a Farah before.
I shop up here north in Richmond/El Sobrante Area Raley’s. I found it in an odd place, near the fresh seafood cooler. It was in a shelf next to it with seafood glop. It wasn’t with the other seasonings.
Keep looking. If it is in our local Raley’s, I’m darned sure it has to be somewhere around there.
Or do what I’m going to do, buy it from their web site, I put it in the post up there some place.
I can hardly wait to get the salt free stuff, it’s so good. And since it’s salt free, I can add all I want!

  5. I am looking for Pappys seasoning in either Renton WA or Bellevue WA. Do you know what store may carry it? I need to find it by this weekend please!

  6. Egads man, I just use it. I don’t have their reseller list. Try giving them a call at 559-291-0218 and ask them. Surely it has to be in your area!

  7. If you can not find Pappys in your area stores you can order it directly from the company at 559-291-0218, they ship via ups and you can order as little or as much as you like and any of their products

  8. I got hooked on pappys while we lived in Porterville Ca. for a couple of years. We would visit there at least once a year since we moved back. And I would always pick up a large container. But we havn’t been back for 2 years. I can’t find it in any of the major stores in Oregon. I use it on all kinds of meats, veggies. It is great stuff

  9. I’m looking for the 50% less salt seasoning. Found some on the web but it only came in 32oz bottles and as I am 88 I wouldn’t even but a dent in a bottle that big. Anyone have any suggestions. Harley T.

  10. Hey Harley,
Ya know, I would give them a call at 559-291-0218 and tell them what you told us.
I’m 88 man! Gimme a break, I need a smaller container! I’ll bet they’d send it to you.

  11. Dr. Biggles: Thanks so much for the phone number and suggestion. The number on the bottle I had didn’t work as the area code had changed. Guess I’ve had this bottle too long. Anyway, I did as you suggested, they don’t have anyone near us who stocks Pappy’s, so the are mailing me a bottle. So I am all set, thanks to you and have a great day. Harley Thompson

  17. I recently moved back from Yuba City Ca, I only lived there for about 6 months, but in that short amount of time, I happened upon Pappy’s while smoking some meat for my sister in-laws restaurant, and now that I am back home in Western KY I cannot find any??? Somebody please help?!?!?

  18. Best sh!t on the planet!!
You can pretty much put this on anything and it will taste good.
I was recently seeing this girl when I noticed that her nana was a little on the overly ripped side, so I took a pinch of good ol pappy’s…..used it a dip replacement and let’s just say the tuna became into a nicely seasoned chicken boob!
Thanks pappy….are you the sh!t in more ways that one!!

  19. I have been using Pappy’s for well over 10 years now and i must say i cannot eat pork chops without it. Love it Love it Love it.

  20. We live in Stockton, California. Where can we purchase your seasonings and rubs around here. We bought a large amount about a year ago when we were in Squaw Valley, Ca. But are unable to find it around home. It was the best rub we have ever tried on our steaks for bar-b-q and other methods of cooking.

  21. OMG… heh heh I’ve been using this stuff for years… I’ve used it for every type of meat and vegetable i know… Love Pork Chops with this on the grill same for chicken and several types of fish. One thing I love is when I fry chicken, instead of salt i add pappy;s to the flour mix when i bread the chicken… fries up so damn good… i just wish I could find it locally, Usually grandma sends me a couple big jars from northern Cali from Stater Bros for my bday or Christmas.

  22. Pappy’s has a new website up, seems they take orders using paypal now, which is good since that’s how I like to shop. They even got full color pics and product information of there entire line. SWEET!
    Check it out http://www.pappyschoice.com

  23. You can also order Pappys from a store on Ebay called Grady Distribution. They offer bulk prices with lower shipping costs. If you order there bulk offer, you pay about $10 per bottle and that is with the shipping added in. I cannot find it cheaper then that anywhere else with shipping cost combined. I have checked everywhere online and best price for 5 32oz bottles is Ebay. They also offer a discounted price on the assortment 5 bottle package of Pappys for those of you looking for 50% less sodium or Lemon Pepper and other varieties. We love this stuff also, and we live in Illinois, so whenever we run low i order from Ebay. Here is the link too the store on Ebay.

  24. You can find Pappy’s Choice Seasoning at Costco.
I picked up a 32OZ shaker of it for about $7 something, if my short-term memory serves me.
I finished rubbing some nice pork ribs with them several hours ago and plan on checking the results for dinner in a bit.
Costco also had another rub close to where I found Pappy’s. It is a Kansas City, Oklahoma or a sort of that neck of the woods rub for a few dollars more.
I checked the ingredients on both and went with Pappy’s on that.
