M & D’s – Denver Colorado

Another fine restaurant review from our very own Joe Bob in Denver …

M and Ds Cafe
Started back in Texas in the 1940s by Johnny Holiday, SR. He was barbecueing rabbit, armadillo and turkey along with the usual. His daughter and son in law, Mack and Daisy have been in Denver since the early 70s, and on 28th street since ’77. This is the best barbecue I have had in a sit down restuarant.

Started out with fried okra and iced tea. Note the 1/4 lemon that comes with tea. Then onto the $18.50 Combination Q so I could sample all the meat. A huge platter shows up with two ribs, chicken, links, pork and beef brisket. I also got beans and yams for my two sides. My head spun as I viewed the layout before me. So….okra is always great..any okra. ( Texan here) Beans were nice murky sorta flavor, while yams were yammy but had some sort of brown sugar like sweetness to them. Uneeded for yams I think. The ribs were actually pink inside but a tad dry. Cooked when? The chicken was great, the skin fell right off. Pork was wonderful, juicy and tender. Beef was still moist. Links are links….hard to jack them up. I got the mild sauce and digging around under it all was some nice grease pools and no vinegar gagular taste like most barecue sauces made by fools. I ate only 1/4 of my food and was unable to move. Tons of take home. This would have fed three people at the annual MeatFest. Of course I got pecan pie to go. This is made in a puff pastry and the pecans are NOT a gooey dark brown mess of sugar sauce and pecan matter.

These pecans are real. They taste like pecans! I am from Texas so we had pecan trees all over and just knocked them down and cracked them open with rusty pliers and ate the meat. That cannot be reproduced in any restuarant…but these were close.

M and Ds has the usual array of sandwiches, burgers and deep fried fish. I noticed the next table getting breaded deep fried something with tails intact. Looked good. Napoleon the waiter was a cool kid. Go eat here when in Denver.

  1. Hey Joe Bob
I live in Denver and want to eat at M & D’s, but I can’t find it anywhere. Not in the phone book, not Google, not QwestDex – nowhere.
    Where is this place?
